Sabine Baring-Gould

The Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924) was a West Country parson, hymn-writer, folk song collector, and much more besides. See Wikipedia or, if your local public library subscibes, the entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography.

His best known hymn composition is Onward Christian Soldiers, but he was also responsible for the English translation of Gabriels' Message.

His folk song manuscripts are now available online as part of the VWML Archive.
