Angelus ad Virginem

Angelus ad Virginem comes from a late thirteenth century English manuscript. Possibly French in origin it seems to have been very popular in England, and is mentioned in the Miller’s Tale. Having looked at various rather laboured English translations, Sophie decided to follow the advice in The Oxford Book of Carols that “it is best sung in the original Latin”. In case your Latin’s a little rusty, it tells essentially the same story as Gabriel’s Message. In contrast to the rather solemn way modern choirs tend to perform this carol, we’ve ben inspired by the medieval association of carols with dancing.
