Fill the Tankard

A Taste of Ale track 1

A dance tune from some undated fiddlers' tunebooks formerly belonging to the Browne Family of Troutbeck. These manuscripts are housed in The Armitt Library, Ambleside, in the Lake District; the tunes are available in ABC format at the Village Music Project website.

In the original the tune is written out in 6/8, but it clearly ought to be in 9/8. We play all the notes as written, and this divides very neatly into bars of 9/8 - apart from one bar in the A section which obstinately remains in 6/8.

To see the tune as it probably ought to have been played, see http://tunearch.org/wiki/Fill_the_Tankard - but I much prefer our slightly crooked version.
