Shadrack "Shepherd" Hayden

Shadrack Hayden - better known as Shepherd Hayden - was a singer from whom a number of very fine songs were noted by Cecil Sharp and Alfred Williams. He was born at Lyford, Berkshire in 1826. He shepherded at Hatford near Faringdon before moving to Bampton, Oxfordshire in 1891. He was living in Bampton when Cecil Sharp collected songs from him, towards the end of his life, in 1909, 1910 and 1914.

There is a list of songs collected from Hayden at https://folkopedia.info/wiki/Shadrack_Hayden. The photograph shown here was taken by Cecil Sharp - view this and three others from VWML Online.
