Nowell Nowell

Knock At The Knocker, Ring At The Bell track 2

Nowell Nowell and The Cherry Tree Carol are both from the Cornish carolling tradition. Both are also included in the New Oxford Book of Carols, although we actually learned Nowell Nowell from The Crystal Spring – a selection of songs compiled by Maud Karpeles from Cecil Sharp’s collection. Sharp had it in 1913 from Mr. Bartle Symons of Camborne. It is clearly a very close relative of the modern carol ‘The First Nowell’, whose roots can in any case be traced back to Cornish sources.
