Font Whatling’s Polka

Jack-in-the-Green track 14

This tune turns up frequently in East Anglia, but never seems to have a proper name. Walter ‘Font’ Whatling, a melodeon player and step-dancer from Worlingworth in Suffolk, recorded it in the 1970s; he learned it from local fiddler Harkie Nesling. Recordings of both Font and Harkie playing the tune were included on the Topic LP The Earl Soham Slog and, listening to the record again soem years later, I realised that what we play is actually closer to Harkie Nesling's version.
