Sellwood Molyneux’ Carol
The 25th Track 7
Sellwood Molyneux’ Carol comes from A Book of Psalmody published by Matthew Wilkins of Great Milton in Oxfordshire, and is one of many fine carols included in Dave Townsend’s collection Oxfordshire Carols. Wilkins used the tune for Psalm 145, but Dave Townsend came across a copy of the book inscribed “Sellwood Mollineux 1775”, and in that copy this piece is marked “Carol tune”. Dave decided it would work well as a setting for ‘Hark, The Glad Sound! The Saviour Comes!’, by prolific hymn-writer Philip Doddridge (1702-1751). The Molyneux family, incidentally, were farmers in the Great Milton area. Like Newton's Double, this is in the repertoire of Dave Townsend’s West Gallery choir, the Christminster Singers.
You can hear a live recording of this carol at A Folk Song A Week Week 122 – Hymn for Christmas Day / Sellwood Mollineux’ Carol / Newton’s Double.
Ian recorded this with the Mellstock Band on their CD Glad Tidings.
